PhD project opportunity:
Land use & land cover change and land tenure arrangements in Java, Indonesia
The artec | Research Centre for Sustainability Studies, University of Bremen, in collaboration with the Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, is seeking a PhD student, starting in April 2012 or soon thereafter – subject to availability of a scholarship.
The candidate will contribute to the Indonesian-German research project SPICE (Science for the Protection of Indonesian Coastal Marine Ecosystems), Sub-project: Upstream-downstream linkages and new instruments in coastal and watershed governance.
The PhD project aims at a quantitative analysis of land use / cover change (LUCC) and land tenure arrangements in the Segara Anakan lagoon, Central Java, and its catchment area. Building on previous qualitative work on LUCC in this region, the PhD student will analyse satellite images, carry out land use mapping, and gather and analyse data on land tenure arrangements. Conducting social-scientific case studies in addition to the GIS-based area wide analyses is possible.
Place of work: Bremen, Germany, with field work periods in Java, Indonesia
University degree (M.A. or equivalent)
Good English skills (GER B2; IELTS score of no less than 5.5; TOEFL iBT of no less than 87 or comparable score with TOEFL CBT or PBT)
Advanced skills in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and/or satellite image processing and land use mapping
Expertise related to land use and land tenure systems and/or
Practical experience with methods of empirical social scientific research
